Multicultural Volunteer
Project Update (June – July 2005)
The
Multicultural Volunteer Project continues to build upon the research conducted
by Rick Juliusson in Phase 1. The second
phase of the project is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage, and
managed by 411 Seniors Centre Society.
In
April, as part of the Multicultural Volunteer Project, Surjit Lalli, Mohinder
Kaur Sidhu and Saroj Sood, members of the Punjabi volunteer team, presented a
workshop to the senior’s group at Sunset Community Centre. The topic was mental health and stress
reduction. The volunteers promoted
participation and discussion amongst the women who attended. Laughter was mentioned as an important factor
to reduce stress in our lives, and there was a practical demonstration. The team had all 25 of participants laughing
at the same time. What a great way to
conclude the workshop!
Also
in April, the Latin American Senior’s Group gathered at Trout Lake Community
Centre to listen to the presentation of Zoila Salazar, Ana Dominguez and Julia
Garcia, members of the Latin American volunteer team. They talked about Falls Prevention, and
useful tips to avoid falls. Discussion
was encouraged, and the participants practiced stretching exercises to keep
muscles and bones strong.
The
commitment, time and effort that the volunteers dedicate to disseminate
information in their communities is remarkable.
This
project is very positive because it acknowledges the diversity of our
population. Written materials in Spanish and Punjabi are given to the specific
groups, and an evaluation is completed after each workshop.
As
the new coordinator, this a great opportunity for me to be part of this
important project. The vision, work and
commitment of the volunteers is evident in the
enthusiastic responses of the participants.
We are grateful for the excellent work that the former coordinator, Dora
Replanski, has contributed. We wish her the best.
