Launching a Diabetes Type II Tool Kit For
Seniors (June/July 2004)
As a part of
our annual Open House event, the 411 Seniors Centre will host a press
conference to launch a diabetes type two ‘tool kit’, developed for seniors by
Canadian Pensioners Concerned (CPC) with support from the 411 Seniors
Centre. Jim Ward from CPC will be on
hand to answer questions.
Health Canada
estimates that there are almost two million Canadians with diabetes. About 90% of them suffer from type two diabetes. Type two diabetes is the form of diabetes that people tend
to get most frequently when they’re past their middle years. The incidence is particularly high among
senior citizens. Recognizing this,
Canadian Pensioners Concerned, a nationwide education and advocacy group for
seniors in Canada, has
developed a ‘tool kit’. The ‘tool kit’
is a ‘how to’ manual, in easy-to-read magazine format, that brings together
information on type two diabetes and ways for dealing with it. The project is funded by Health Canada.
For the past two years CPC has been developing and
testing the ‘tool kit’ through discussions, and a
series of meetings with senior citizens and care professionals in locations
across Canada. The main aim of the ‘tool kit’ is to act as a
catalyst for bringing together seniors in groups to discuss and develop ways in
which they can encourage and support each other in moving towards living
healthier lives.
Research has shown that eating properly and being
physically active can significantly reduce the probability of developing type two diabetes.
Even if you have type two diabetes, eating
properly and being active will mean that you will probably avoid the worst
effects of the condition.
The ‘tool kit’ is being distributed across Canada throughout 2004 through the network of
seniors’ organizations.
