Lesbian, Gay,
Transgendered, Bisexual Generations
Project Update
(Dec 2004-Jan 2005)
After
three and a half remarkable years, the 411 LGTB Generations Project is coming
to a close. The success of this project is evident across all parts of the 411,
and its momentum continues to build. We can all take pride in the good work
we’ve done to help make this happen.
Although the Generations Project will be over, our commitment to a
welcoming 411 for aging and older members of the LGTB community will continue.
The LGTB Board committee will remain active in its liaison role between the
Board, staff, volunteers, members, and clients. Programs and services staff and
volunteers will continue to make LGTB inclusivity a priority in all of their
work. Continue to look for flyers and posters advertising activities at 411, as
well as activities in the larger community.
A time of transition is always an exciting time to get involved. If you
would like to do so, please come and talk to me, drop me a line at ssorrell@411seniors.bc.ca,
or call me at 604-684-8171.
This fall the 411 partnered with the LGTB Centre on two major events.
At Seniors Summit II we hosted a workshop called Quirks and Queers: a
Lighthearted Glimpse at Gay Culture. In October and November we also offered
an eight-week support and discussion group for older LGTB folks experiencing
challenges around being single. Both activities were a huge success, and a lot
of fun to be part of.
The popularity of Wednesday Afternoons at the Movies continues
to grow. We showed films in September, October and November. Our final film for
2004 will be Fire, Deepa Mehta’s controversial film about two married
Indian women, sisters-in-law, who fall in love and refuse to deny their
relationship. Their courageous and rebellious choices change their families
forever. Fire will be shown on
Wednesday, December 15 at
In closing, I want to wish everyone in the 411 community the best in
the upcoming holiday season. Thank you, everyone, for making 2004 a fabulous
year!
