Other Facts
- 14 to 16 Board members who are elected annually by the Society’s membership direct the Society’s work
- The Board selects and appoints an Executive Director who is responsible for the administration of the organization
- Almost 250 volunteers, a core staff of 11 and project staff deliver the Society’s services under the direction of the Executive Director
- The Society’s annual operating budget of approximately $850,000 is raised largely through the efforts of volunteers and staff
- Apart from projects, only 15% of the Society’s operating budget comes from government sources
- Other sources of revenue for the Society include the United Way of the Lower Mainland, the City of Vancouver, BC Gaming and Enforcement Branch, donations, and bequests
- Volunteers generously donate almost 40,000 hours of their time each year to the Society
- Over 1,200 members and a great number of non-members avail themselves of the Society’s services
- Almost 80% of the people served by the Society are on income assistance
- The 411 Dunsmuir Street Building also houses the Society’s many Associate Member organizations whose services are also directed toward seniors (see enclosed)
- Health services provided by the Society include a blood pressure clinic, a podiatrist clinic, an annual dental clinic, and free annual flu shots
- The Society’s cafeteria provides daily, low-cost, nutritional meals
- Some of the services provided by the Society’s Information and Referral department include peer to peer counselling and support, information and referral to other community and government agencies, outreach counselling services, as well as free income tax and simple will preparation
- The Society provides over 40 other programs and services in the areas of health, education and recreation
- The Society publishes a Newsletter and produces a weekly radio program to communicate to seniors
- The Society networks with other senior serving agencies both regionally and nationally.
