A History of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgendered Programs/Projects at the 411
In years past and in partnership with The Centre, and Family Services of Greater Vancouver, the 411 was involved in the Generations Project as a response to the needs of aging and older LGTB individuals and communities. The 411 continues to support the overall goals and objectives of the project.
The Generations Project recognized that significant numbers of LGTB people are ageing and older. Many experience invisibility within LGTB communities, seniors serving agencies, and care facilities. This invisibility, along with other barriers to accessing inclusive and sensitive resources, affects the health and well-being of this population.
Project Objectives:
- To decrease barriers and increase access to culturally sensitive support and care that will contribute to health and well-being of aging and older LGTB individuals.
- To increase awareness about the needs of ageing and older LGTB people within LGTB communities, and with care providers and seniors’ facilities.
- To decrease isolation for aging and older LGTB people by developing a model of cultural sensitivity for senior serving organizations.
- To build community capacity through the provision of age-specific assessment, counseling, therapy, and referral; the development of a mentoring program; intergenerational activities; and peer support through Information and Referral services.
The 411
The 411’s primary focus was internal, and concentrated on three main focus areas:
- Creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for older LGTB people.
- Providing accessible and relevant Information and Referral services.
- Hosting special and regular events for the LGTB seniors’ community.
"Organizational Change Model: A Framework for Welcoming LGTB Seniors"
The 411 remains committed to these objectives, for more information on current LGTB programming at the 411 Seniors Centre please click on the “Current LGTB programs/projects” link
