Historical Facts

  • Tom Alsbury was not only the first President of 411, but also the Mayor of Vancouver and a Vancouver Sun columnist.
  • Former Information and Referral Counsellor and 411 Life Member, Fred Sharp, was also an MLA.   Fred is a founding member of the Lion’s Club and it is due to his influence that 411 received support for our Christmas dinners for many years.
  • Former Information and Referral Counsellor, Daisy Webster, was also an MLA.
  • In 1978, Ruth Armstrong was the first female to be elected to the 411 Board of Directors.   She received her Life Membership Award in 1986.
  • Grace McCarthy , former MLA is an honourary patron of the 411.
  • In August 1982, past President, Chuck Bailey, was invited by the Federal Government to attend the United Nations World Assembly on Aging.
  • In 1987, CITATIONS, signed by representatives of three levels of Government (Federal, Provincial, and Municipal), were presented to past Presidents, Tom Alsbury, Chuck Bailey, Ruth Armstrong, Fred Sharp, Victor Jamieson and Roy Slater.
  • In September 1987, former Information and Referral Counsellor and Director, Jack Barnett, was chosen by the Department of National Health and Welfare to receive the Canada Volunteer Award Certificate of Merit.
  • In November 1988, past President, Chuck Bailey, was honoured with the Senior Citizens man of the Year Award presented by Brock House in conjunction with the Bank of Montreal.
  • In September 1992, the Honourable Kim Campbell, Minister of Justice, Attorney General, and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, hosted an event at 411 to present awards to 14 distinguished seniors in her riding.
  • In 1993, Kay Stovold was made an Honorary 411 Director.   She also received the City of Vancouver Civic Merit Award in 1995 from the Mayor’s office for her work in helping seniors.
  • In April 1993, past 411 Executive Director, Madge Sasvari, received the CITATION of Citizenship Award at the Court of Canadian Citizenship.
  • In April 1993, Max Halber, on behalf of 411, accepted the Volunteer Vancouver Award from Lieutenant Governor, David Lam, and Mayor, Gordon Campbell.
  • In November 1993, 411 Member, Maurice McHugh, received the Malta George Cross 50 th Anniversary Commemorative Metal.
  • In 1995, past President, Ursula Kasting, was nominated for the Women of Distinction Award given by Volunteer Vancouver.
  • In 1996, past President, Ron MacLeod, was honoured with the Ron MacLeod Environment Science Endowment Fund, established at Simon Fraser University.   This was in recognition of Ron’s work in the fisheries and coastal communities of British Columbia, as well as his continued concern for students.   He also received the Order of Canada in 2002.
  • In March 1997, past President, and co-founder of the Greater Vancouver Senior’s Coalition, Joyce Jones, was nominated for the Vancouver YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the Voluntary Community and Humanitarian category.
  • In 2001, Clive Mallory, member of the Multicultural Committee, and former Board Member, received the City of Vancouver’s Cultural Harmony Award.
  • Ivan Cumming , former 1 st Vice President of 411, was the Chair of the Provincial Seniors Advisory Committee for 2002.
  • In 2003, 411 held the first Pride Day Event for seniors in Canada.
  • In 2003, the 411 Seniors Centre was awarded the Cultural Harmony Award by the City of Vancouver for its work in promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • In 2004,the 411 Seniors Centre’s Seniors Outreach Counselling Partnership Program was honoured with a Celebration of Community Award by the United Way of the Lower Mainland’s Spirit Awards and ScotiaBank.
  • In 2007, Joyce Jones President won the Van Dussen Community Volunteer Award.
